Reused and Recycled Enrichment

Providing enrichment for your dog doesn’t require expensive toys or a lot time. Your dog can have a great time solving puzzles to get food with your recycling! One example of this is reusing your packaging materials that you would ordinarily just put in the recycling bin. Here I have some brown paper that was used as packing material and an empty box of Keurig pods. I ripped the paper into approximately four-inch squares. Then I placed a few pieces of kibble on the paper and crumpled it up into a ball to hold the kibble inside. (You could use your dog’s regular food or treats. Dry food works best.) Put the paper balls into a box and close it up. Then give the stuffed box to your dog and watch the fun!

Some safety considerations include making sure your boxes are free from any staples, tape, or stickers. Your dog may love to rip and shred so removing anything that could cause injury, choking, or blockages is important. Use materials that are safe for your dog. Plastic (like bags, bubble wrap, or other similar packing materials) is generally not a good material for dogs.

Some helpful tips and ideas: There are an almost unlimited number of variations on this type of enrichment. You could use boxes of different sizes, boxes inside of boxes, some loose treats and some wrapped treats, paper bags, paper tubes (like paper towel or toilet paper rolls). It’s all up to your imagination!
